Destination Wedding in Faro

Faro, the region of Algarve's capital, is a town of approximately 50,000 people, and is located about 30 miles west of the Spanish border. The city boasts both Arab and Roman ruins and many famous historical sites, such as the18th century Arco da Vila, considered the gateway to the Cathedral Square. This ornamental arch, once the facade of an old palace, is the entrance to a serene plaza. The 18th-century bishop's palace, a 13th-century cathedral, and an archaeological museum can also be found there. The most enjoyable parts of Faro are the old walled areas beside the port, and the nearby promenade, where pedestrians can enjoy walking, great shopping and excellent restaurants. Several blocks away is the famous Carmo Church known for its creative gold-leaf woodwork.

There is a small Naval Museum near Praša de Dom Francisco Gomes where models of boats and ships exhibit the maritime history of the Portuguese coast. Faro is also the home of the Ria Formosa lagoon, a nature reserve, and a stopover for hundreds of bird species during the spring and autumn migratory seasons.

Faro is filled with hotels, shops offering local artifacts, and municipal buildings, where the administration of the entire Algarve region is conducted. The town is a well-known fishing port, and the site of the University of the Algarve. There is a convenient railway station, and an international airport where most visitors to the Algarve area arrive. A few miles west of the airport is the small town of LoulÚ, renowned for its superior produce market and for its leather and woodwork handcrafts. Quinta do Lago and Vale de Lobo, popular vacation destinations, are located west of Faro, and both feature seven golf courses, tennis clubs, and holiday resorts.

Faro is a trendy town for a destination wedding, offering a historical background and a variety of activities from which to choose. The people of Faro know how to celebrate and can help make a marriage celebration an unforgettably fun-filled experience.
