Destination Weddings in Lagos
Located about 50 miles west of Faro, lies the ancient town of Lagos which was the former capital of the Algarve from 1578 until 1756. Lagos played an important role in the Portuguese maritime discoveries and it was from here that Vasco de Gama set sail for what was to be his discovery of Brazil. Nowadays, with about 27,000 inhabitants Lagos is one of the most interesting towns on Portugal's Algarve coast. Besides its authentic history, you can find fantastic beaches and a lovely town with both laid back and more sophisticated bars and restaurants. Lagos also boasts a modern marina stocked with everything from traditional fishing boats to lavish yachts. From here you can book boat tours and deep sea-fishing adventures, not to mention rent your own luxurious yacht.
Across the river from Lagos you can find the long sandy beach of Meia Praia. This beach is the largest in the area and is sheltered from the north by a small hill with gorgeous villas. South of Lagos are many cliffs that have eroded over the years into twisted arches and tunnels which separate tiny grottos and coves, all blessed with sparkling blue waters. Some of these beaches even have steps built into the cliffs; the most popular of these is Praia Dona Ana.
Lagos also offers easy access to the nearby town of Sagres, the most south-west corner of Europe, which is a must see for tourists. Prince Henry the navigator planned his epic voyages from this location and also set up a school where sailors studied navigation and geography. Here you can find very impressive vista points with the Atlantic Ocean waves crashing into the towering sea cliffs.
With its stunning beaches, excellent climate, scenic coastline, historical patrimony, rich gastronomy and plenty of cultural and night-life entertainment venues, Lagos has everything you could possibly want for an unforgettable wedding or honeymoon!
