Destination Weddings in Portimão
A town with about 35,000 inhabitants, Portimão is Algarve’s second largest town and is located about 30 miles west of Albufeira. It is conveniently located and offers easy access to the nearby towns of Silves, Lagos, and Sagres. Silves has a fascinating historical past that includes the battles between the Moors, the Crusaders, and the Portuguese. The city, unfortunately, was damaged in the earthquake of 1755. Armação de Pera is worth a visit to see a famous 18th Century fortress and it is well known for its sandy beach. Alvor, a beach community, is another popular tourist site, as is Carvoeiro, which is surrounded by quaint villas. Ferragudo is a delightful fishing village located across the river from Portimão. Praia de Rocha and Praia de Vau offer visitors a bustling nightlife and great beaches.
The government has elected to destroy most of the architecturally significant structures in Portimao in an effort to keep the town more contemporary. In fact, its church is the last remaining building in town that dates back to 1476, although it has survived numerous updates since 1717.
Portimão originated as a small trading port for the Greeks, Phoenicians and the Carthaginians. Located at the mouth of the River Arade, the town has been purported to be a former settlement for smugglers and pirates. Now, a relatively new marina enables a connection to Praia da Rocha, an area where trendy bars and restaurants can be found. There are two bridges to cross when approaching Portimão from Faro. An old one that runs along the harbor, and a more desirable new one built in the 19th century. There is a plaza along the river that has several cafés as well as a variety of boat and watercraft rentals.
Fun-loving couples will benefit from a wedding ceremony set in Portimão. With spectacular beaches and a rich historical background, this town is a sure bet for a happy celebration.
