Destination Wedding in Tavira
To the east of Faro, in the southeast corner of Portugal, is one of the most pictorial areas along the Algarve coast. Tavira is a charming town filled with white-washed houses that are crowned with pyramid-shaped tiled roofs, and decorative chimneys. Considered to be one of the most architecturally appealing towns in the Algarve region, Tavira is believed to date back to about 2000 BC. Not many of the buildings survived the horrendous earthquake of 1755, but the town has been rebuilt, and now features stunning18th-century structures. Tavira is famous for its 37 churches, and is in fact often called ‘the town of churches.’ The Palácio de Galeria is a cultural center as well as a site of local historical interest.
Tavira borders both banks of the Gialo River, which are connected by an old Roman bridge. The town is set amid beautiful orange, fig and almond trees. There are sandy beaches located on an island known as Ilha de Tavira, which can be accessed by ferry from the main part of town. Cabanas and Pedras del Rey, both originally very small beachfront villages, are located near Tavira. There is a famous olive tree in Pedras del Rey that stands almost 8 meters high and is believed to be the oldest in Portugal.
There are many points of interest in and around Tavira. The remains of an old Roman villa can be found in Torre de Aves. The traditional village of Cacela-a-Velha, which was utilized by the Phoenicians and later was taken over by the Knights of Santiago in 1240 can be found to the east of Tavira. Tavira is a magnificent choice for a destination wedding, given its unique architecture and its picturesque scenery. A marriage ceremony here is sure to provide a lifetime of pleasing memories.
