Destination Weddings in Flores
Flores is the northern-most island of the Azores group,
So named for its abundant flowers. The island contains seven calm lakes within volcanic craters, and the surrounding hills are green and peppered with quaint villages. Lajes, the picturesque main city is a fishing port set within green fields.
The island of Flores is considered to be the most beautiful of the Azores Islands, and is part of the western group. In the summer season, the island is covered by thousands of beautiful blue and pink hydrangeas. The Island has dramatic deep valleys and high peaks.
Flores is separated into two municipalities, Santa Cruz das Flores in the north, and Lajes das Flores in the south. There are chapels and churches in almost every town, windmills, and an illustrious landscape. Near the village of Fajazinha is the celebrated Ribeira Grande waterfall with a massive 984ft drop. There is an ethnographic museum in the town of Santa Cruz, which displays fishing and whaling artifacts. Flores can be access by air travel, but there are boat rides to the island of Ilha do Corvo during the summer months.
In 1963, the French established a communications station on Flores. Soon thereafter, a hospital, a power station and an airport were instituted, which greatly improved the island’s economy. After the French left the island in 1994, tourism became the island's most popular industry, and it is still one of Portugal’s most enjoyable destinations.
Flores makes a wonderful destination for a wedding, with its scenic landscape and its natural, decorative floral backdrop.
