Destination Wedding in S. Miguel
The largest in the Azores group, Sao Miguel is considered to be incredibly panoramic. Although it is the largest island, it is still modest in size, measuring just 40 miles long and 7.5 miles wide. The island is the most populated, containing 126,000 inhabitants. The Sete Cidades, a 15 square mile volcanic crater that contains two lakes, is Sao Miguel’s most popular attraction. Sao Miguel is a popular tourist destination. It has a busy port and one of the three international airports nearby. Filled with green pastures, the natural beauty of the island is a big draw. Sao Miguel was formerly two separate islands and in 1563 a volcanic eruption bound them together. At that point, a lake was formed, which now has lovely sandy beaches, a favorite spot for visitors. The volcanic peaks are covered with lush forests, which adds more to the island’s scenic appeal. The island is renowned for its sweet pineapples and unique embroidery crafts. The capital of Sao Miguel, Ponta Delgada, is the largest in the archipelago and is marked by a historic center with structures dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries. The town has charming white homes, and a variety of churches that hint of a wealthy past. At the water's edge, three 18th Century arches stand prominently, illustrating their former function as a gateway into town. The main church, Igreja de São Sebastião, dates back to the 16th Century, and exhibits gorgeous white limestone in the doorway. Terra Nostra Park has a tropical garden where bathing in therapeutic spring water can be enjoyed. The only tea plantation in Europe is found at Gorreana.
The most famous dish in the Azores, Cozido das Furnas, was borne on this island. This meat stew is placed under ground and steamed for several hours in a volcanic setting, which is why this meal must be pre-ordered the day prior to consumption. Couves Solteiras, Arroz de Lapa and Polvo Guisado are other local favorites.
Sao Miguel is the place to choose for a wedding celebration laced with Portuguese flavor. Amid a stunning setting, a lovely marriage ceremony is a surefire prospect.
