Estoril was at one point known as a simple small town located between Lisbon and Cascais, until it was transformed as a refuge for European royalty who had been banished from their countries. It has been home to King Umberto II of Italy, Karl Habsburg of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Juan de Bourbon of Spain, and King Carol of Romania, and many of their mansions still exist to confirm it. Estoril is located 16 miles west of Lisbon, and is regarded as a popular holiday destination for many Europeans. At its prime, tourists referred to it as the "Portuguese Riviera." The town is also known for a popular summer fair, where local hand-crafts are exhibited and sold.
