Destination Weddings in Setúbal

Setúbal is one of Portugal’s oldest cities, and is located about 25 miles south of Lisbon. The area is a popular tourist destination, offering beaches, a captivating orange grove-filled countryside, and a number of vineyards.

Visitors also enjoy a tour of the Roman town of Cetóbriga, which was at one point a prosperous fish-salting town. In fact, today, it’s not uncommon to find piles of sea salt drying in the sun throughout the area. The 16th Century Cathedral, Santa Maria da Graça, has a gorgeous display of tiles that date back from the 18th Century. The Igreja de Jesus is a Gothic church with columns carved in Arrábida pink stone from the nearby quarry throughout its interior. The Museu de Setúbal, found in the Mosteiro de Jesus, has interesting paintings and relics. The Museu de Arqueológia e Etnográfia has wide variety of historical collections that have been discovered within the local region, and displays local crafts, such as the processing of cork. The 16th Century Castle was constructed to defend the port from intruders, and has now been turned into a lavish Pousada for tourists.

Setúbal is the main center of Portugal’s renowned sardine industry. It is also known for producing muscadel, which some consider to be the best tasting wine in the world. Setúbal has the third largest port in Portugal, and since it lies to the south of Lisbon, it has convenient motorway access. The town itself is appealing with its many pedestrian streets, walkways, local shops and gardens.

Those who hope to experience an authentic Portuguese wedding should choose Setúbal. With its charm, significant architectural structures and distinctive history, it makes a fascinating setting for a celebration of marriage.
