Destination Weddings in Torres Vedras

A royal residence from the mid-13th to the early 16th century, Torres Vedras is located along the southwest perimeter of Serra de Montejunto. The town is primarily agricultural, and manufactures a light, refreshing wine of superb quality.

The most celebrated feature of this area are the ‘Lines of Torres Vedras,’ a series of forts in Portugal built between November 1809 and September 1810 during the Peninsular War. The Duke of Wellington built these forts, in an effort to fend off Napoleon's troops during the war. Portuguese workers, under the supervision of British and Portuguese Army Engineers, completed the construction. This war is known as Invasões Francesas, and was fought on the Iberian Peninsula by Spanish, Portuguese, and the British forces in opposition to the Napoleonic French. There are several points of interest in and around this area. Largo de São Pedro is centrally located, and contains winged dragons that embellish the Manueline portal of the church of São Pedro, rebuilt in the 16th century. The monastery church of the Convento de Graça features a notable 17th-century gilded altarpiece. Varatojo, located 4 km west of Torres Vedras, is where the old convent of Santo António, which is lined with 17th-century azulejo glazed tiles, can be found. Along the coast, the beaches of Santa Cruz and Azul captivate tourists. Another famous event in Torres Vedras is its Carnival, which is extremely popular with locals and tourists alike. The event is regarded as the "most Portuguese of Portugal," and lures thousands of visitors annually.

A wedding in Torres Vedras is a ceremony draped in the rich and significant history of Portugal. Set in a beautiful surrounding, this is the perfect launch pad for a marriage celebration.
