Destination Weddings in Óbidos
Because Óbidos is so beautiful, it is usually on the itinerary for every tour through the western or central portion of Portugal. The old town center is surrounded by walls and inside is the quaint old town full of alleyways and Baroque homes, most of which are covered in flowers. An abundance of 18th Century blue tiles line the walls along the southern gate, known as Porta da Vila, because it is considered to be the main entrance. Óbidos is located north of Lisbon, where the red wine is smooth and slightly scented, and the white is fresh and fruity.
The entire city has been declared a national monument, simply because of is astounding beauty. There are no large commercial hotels in Óbidos, although there are several small, boutique-style ones within the old walls. This makes tourism quite limited, and it is almost impossible to get a room during the summer months without sufficient advance planning.
During the Middle Ages, Óbidos was selected as the queen's dowry, and it has always been a favorite residence of St. Isabel and other queens and kings of Portugal. On the opposite side of the square in which the church is located, is a Manueline pillory that is decked with a fishing net that represents the labors of the local fishermen who were unable to save the Queen’s son from drowning. The ancient town walls have been restored over the centuries and the castle itself has been transferred into a famous Pousada. Today, Óbidos is recognized as an artsy town, filled with antique shops and arts and crafts. There are numerous art galleries and stores that feature locally woven rugs.
Highly valued as one of the most beautiful areas in Portugal, Óbidos is the place to choose for a wedding set amid glorious and breathtaking surroundings.
