Destination Weddings in Tomar

Tomar is located 34km east of Fátima and is famous for its Convento de Cristo, an artistic tour de force, which weaves together the military, religious and royal aspects of Portugal’s history. The Convento de Cristo is located in a delightful garden with spectacular views, about a 15 minute stroll uphill from the centre of town.

This town was established in March of 1160 by order of the first Grand Master of the Order of the Knights Templar in Portugal, Gualdim Pais. The Order was a group of knights whose main objective was to help the Portuguese defeat the Moors, who occupied the land at that point. This ‘Order’ held private meetings, which took place in the "Charola," an octagonal chapel that is designed in the Byzantine style. It is located in the heart of the 12th Century Convento de Cristo, which was constructed mostly from Roman ruins. The 12th Century Castle attached to the Convento stands prominent, and is a prime location from which to view the active streets and historic buildings. The town holds historical significance at every turn, but it is also a pleasant place to visit for a variety of reasons, especially during the Festas dos Tabuleiros, which takes place in the first week of July.

Tomar is built on the basis of a simple grid plan. The town has retained its famed charm, with cottages that line narrow cobbled streets. On the central Praça da República there is a well known 17th century town hall, and a row of homes that were erected about that time. Rua Joaquim Jacinto 73 is where the preserved 14th century Synagogue can be found.

Those who enjoy the early historical implication of Portugal usually select Tomar as a wedding site. The town is a great place to visit and take in its charm, beauty and classical significance.
