Destination Weddings in Valença
With a modest population of 3,000, the ancient small town of Valença do Minho rises above the left bank of the River Minho, which divides Spain and Portugal. The Minho River is one of the most scenic in Portugal and runs from the Sao Teotonio Pousada down to the sea at Caminha, with several interesting towns along its edge. Valença do Minho is enclosed by massive walls, from which stunning views of the Minho valley and the mountains of Galicia can be enjoyed. There are numerous historical structures that might interest visitors: the Capela de Sao Sebastiao, built in the late 13th century, Igreja de Santa Maria dos Anjos, and the Igreja Matriz, which was originally established as a collegiate church by Joao I during the early 1400s. The town is filled with narrow alleyways, whitewashed buildings and homes, and the area is well known for its numerous textile shops. The Spaniards often visit Valença do Minho to buy fabrics, and terrycloth goods. Southwest of Valença do Minho is Vila Nova de Cerveira, from where Spain can be accessed by ferry.
Valenca is located in the Vinho Verde region, Portugal’s wine area located in the northwest. The famous "green wine" originates here, and its moderate alcoholic content makes it complimentary to the local meals enjoyed from the Douro River to the Spanish rim. Tourists traverse the Vinho Verde region daily en route to the region’s southern neighbor, the Algarve. Parque da Penada Gerêz, a spectacular nature reserve in the north-east corner on the border with Spain, is of particular interest to tourists.
If charm and antiquity are of particular meaning, then Valenca is the appropriate spot for a wedding celebration. Though small and unpretentious, it is an exemplary place of the Portugal of ages past.
