Destination Weddings in Chaves
One of the few areas in Portugal that has a solid and reliable Roman Bridge, Chaves lies in a within a broad valley in the Montanhas region. Its landmark bridge, with 12 notable arches, is masterfully constructed, and at 140 meters long, it leads visitors to the center of town. Two of the columns of the original bridge, developed by the Emperor Trajan, still stand. Initially, these served as indicators of the distance remaining to the neighboring communities of Astorga in Spanish León and Bracara Augusta, Braga, in Portugal. The bridge was built at some point between the end of the first century and the beginning of the second century.
Travelers along the bridge are encouraged to pause and relish the view; although technically in the center of a busy city, the scenery is quite tranquil, complete with ducks that frolic in the river below. There is also a park that has been built along the north right bank for locals and visitors to enjoy. On the south side of the bridge there is a well-manicured garden where the annual fair takes place, presenting live music, handicrafts and special activities. The park is also great place for those who like to jog.
