Destination Weddings in Guarda
Guarda reigns at about 1056m, and is the highest town in Portugal, located on a plateau on the northeast side of the Estrela mountains. Offering spectacular views, the area is windy and cool year-round. The architecture in this city is often described as ‘visually heavy,’ which is due to its lingering protective heritage. Established in 1197 by Dom Sancho I, Guarda was designed to shield his borders against potential invasions by the Moors and Spaniards. The area around Guarda is peppered with remnants of the castles that were a significant part of the overall defensive system. In the 1850s Guarda was referred to as the city of "4 Fs" – "Fria, Farta, Forte e Feia" (cold, well-supplied, strong and ugly). Today, however, the streets and squares throughout the town are delightful and picturesque.
Guarda is packed with interesting landmarks and monuments. Its Misericordia Church soars high into the crisp blue sky; it is a prominent gothic cathedral that seems to overpower the town's central square. It was built between the 14th and 16th centuries, and contains Gothic, Renaissance, and Manueline elements, as well as an embellished portal and Baroque altars. North of the Cathedral is São Vicente Church, which contains 16 ornate tile panels depicting the life of Christ. Construction of the main church, the Sé, was started in 1390 and not completed until 1540. The Town Museum is located in the old bishop's palace, and exhibits paintings and interesting archeological findings. Praça Velha, the Rua dos Cléricos and the Judiaria are points of interest for visitors, as are the various buildings that date back to the 14th Century.
Couples who enjoy passion and drama will want to take advantage of Guarda’s commanding character as a setting for their wedding. A marriage ceremony is sure to be marked with originality and the historical essence that Guarda offers.
