Destination Weddings in Serra da Estrela

Serra da Estrela is the highest mountain range in continental Portugal, made up of a granite ridge that extends about 100km from Guarda to south of Coimbra. This area is believed to be blessed with healing waters, which is why resort towns, such as Curia and Luso can be found here. The mountain range is now part of the Serra da Estrela Natural Park, which affords visitors wonderful opportunities to ski. During the winter months, the mountains look amazing, covered in thick, white snow.

Many believe that the best way to see Serra da Estrela is on foot. The area is overflowing with stunning views, streams, lakes and lush forests, while goats and sheep graze on the hills.

Serra da Estrela is considered one of Portugal's most captivating panoramas, and contains the country's highest peak, the Torre or Malhao da Estrela, at 1,991m high. The largest river in Portugal, the Mondego, runs through Serra da Estrela.

At the bottom of the Serra da Estrela Natural Park are a number of villages that date back to medieval times. Roman remains can be found in Famalicao and Folgosinho, while the Arab influence is evident in the orchards and irrigation system. Viriathus, the famous leader and Portuguese hero, is said to have been born in the Serra da Estrela. The area is renowned for its creative handiwork which includes basket weaving using chestnut and wicker, smoked produce, and embroidered cotton goods. The Serra da Estrela is also famous for its smoked sausages, as well as its local cheese called "Queijo da Serra."

Summer or winter, Serra da Estrella is a prime location for a wedding ceremony because of its outstanding location and magnificent scenery every season of the year.
