Destination Weddings in Estremoz
Estremoz lies on the old main road to Spain, and is conveniently located midway between Évora and Elvas. This small town, actually situated 50km northeast of Évora, is renowned for the number of structures built from the locally quarried white marble. Estremoz is also known for its distinct crafts of wood-carving, pottery and leatherwork. Many of these handiworks can be seen at a traditional fair, which takes place annually at the end of April. Uptown is the older part of the city, with its quaint narrow lanes that weave up the hill around the castle. The lower town, is centered around the "Rossio," the Praça do Marquês de Pombal, which is the expansive square where the main weekly market is held on Saturdays. The region produces phenomenal marble, however, agriculture has long been the chief occupation here.
There are several notable churches and buildings that date back to the 15th Century. The tower known as Torre das Três Coroas, is a prominent feature of Estremoz. It is 27 meters high, and was originally built in 1258, although it has since been renovated. Within its walls is a fashionable Pousada, built on the ruins of the old Palace named after the Queen Dona Isabel de Aragon. In the Town Square, the remains of the palace that once belonged to Dom Dinis can be found. The Municipal Museum displays a collection of archaeological findings, and boasts a collection of 17th and 18th Century painted clay figures. Nearby is the 17th Century Palácio da Touca, which stores interesting tiles that date back to that period.
