Catholic Weddings in Portugal
"For this cause a man shall leave his father and mother,
and shall cleave to his wife; and they shall become one flesh."
Genesis 2:24
In Portugal it is possible to plan either a Catholic wedding with legal validity or a Catholic blessing with no legal recognition. The ceremonies are exactly the same; however, couples wanting to perform both a civil and Catholic marriage rite simultaneously may do so. In order to do so, after the Catholic ceremony the couple should follow the priest into the sacristy to sign the papers that make the wedding legally binding. This option is available in most Catholic churches in Portugal, but make sure to check with your wedding coordinator.
Catholic weddings require specific religious paperwork to be completed three months prior to the event. However, the final approval always depends on the local Diocese and not Euroevents.
In order to celebrate a Catholic marriage, one member of the couple must be Catholic. In Portugal, this means that you must have a certificate of baptism, first communion and confirmation.
If you have previously been married in a Catholic church and have not yet received a formal annulment, only a civil ceremony will be possible.
