To marry in Portugal, a certificate of non impediment must be presented. If you are a US-citizen, you will have to present a statement that such a certificate is not in use in the United States. In addition to that, a birth certificate and a certificate of citizenship are required. None of these documents should be older than six months when the wedding occurs. All documents should be properly translated. Once all documents are presented at a wedding hall, the wedding can take place almost immediately, but we advise to expect a 30 day delay in scheduling the civil wedding ceremony. However, one of the couple must reside at least 30 days in the area of jurisdiction of the chosen wedding hall before the paperwork is filed. Once all documents are accepted, another wedding hall can be chosen to perform the wedding. This means that a couple can apply for temporary residence next to an international airport, benefiting of the personal assistance of one of our wedding coordinators, and afterwards forward all approved documents to the civil wedding hall of their choice. Residents outside of the European Union will experience some trouble when attempting to get temporary resident in Portugal.
Exceptions:
When at least one of the couple is Portuguese, the required documents can be given to the next Portuguese embassy. After acceptance of all documents the wedding can be scheduled in any wedding hall in Portugal.
